Many times there is a misconception about what depression looks like. People often think that being depressed means you are sad and down, and although this is true, there are many other signs to look for to see if you are depressed. Are you irritable more often than not? Do you find it difficult to fall asleep? Are you sleeping too much? Have you lost interest in things that normally make you happy? If you answered yes to some of these questions, you may be struggling with depression. However, don't be discouraged if you are experiencing some of these symptoms, you may be able to get past these feelings with the right help.
When clients come to my office looking for support with their depression, I provide a safe space for them to express their feelings and what they are going through. I also gently challenge my clients to begin to reframe their thinking and behaviors. I encourage my clients to remain active, even during times when they may not be so enthusiastic about engaging in activities. Why? Because depression often causes withdraw and isolation, so to combat this I encourage socialization and activity.
